Freelancer Management for Business Owners- A conversation with Founders (Part 1)

26 April, 2025

In the first episode of Outsourced by Jundaro, our new podcast where we explore how smart outsourcing to freelancers can help businesses scale faster, we sat down with Peace Obinani, founder and creative director of Produced by Lucid, a boutique event production and experiential marketing company based in Lagos, Nigeria.

Peace shares how freelancers have helped shape her company’s growth journey, why she prefers hiring directly, and what she wishes could improve in the freelance space.

Here’s a full breakdown of our insightful conversation.

Why 'Produced by Lucid' Relies on Freelancers

Peace explains that the event production industry, especially for young companies, tends to be seasonal. With events not happening every day, having a large full-time team doesn’t make financial sense yet.

“We have core team members on full-time, like an admin assistant, a designer, and a social media manager. But for event execution days, we rely on freelancers. It’s more efficient that way — we only pay when we need them.”

This lean model allows her to scale smartly, avoiding unnecessary payroll costs on non-event days.

Why She Avoids Hiring Through Agencies (For Now)

Although agencies could make the hiring process easier, Peace prefers to hire freelancers directly — and for good reason.

“At this stage, culture fit is everything. Agencies sometimes use a one-size-fits-all approach, and that doesn't work for us. I want to know who I’m hiring and build personal working relationships.”

She notes that as the company grows and standardizes more processes, they may consider agency partnerships in the future.

The Role of Nigerian Freelancers in Scaling Her Business

Freelancers have been instrumental in Produced by Lucid’s growth. They provide flexibility and cost-efficiency — two things every early-stage business needs.

“Freelancers allow us to grow without the financial pressure of hiring full-time across the board. They’ve helped us scale in a smart, sustainable way.”

By working with freelancers who already understand how the company operates, Peace has been able to build a dependable external team without inflating overhead.

The Future of Work: Why Freelancers Are More Essential Than Ever

Peace believes the future of work is flexible — and freelancers are right at the center of that shift.

“As a startup, growing lean is so important. You need to be smart about who you hire full-time and where freelancers fit in. Don’t blow your capital on building a massive team right away.”

She emphasizes the importance of creating a structure that clearly defines where freelancers are needed, and where in-house staff are essential.

Freelancing in Nigeria and Its Global Impact

The rise of freelancing in Nigeria is giving more people access to meaningful work — locally and globally.

“Before now, it was all about finishing school, getting a job, and climbing the ladder. But now, freelancers can explore multiple projects, try out different skills, and earn more. It’s truly opening up new opportunities.”

With the right skills, freelancers in Nigeria can now plug into the global talent market, leveling the playing field for creators, marketers, and professionals across industries.

What Peace Wishes Could Improve About Freelancing

Peace shares that while many freelancers are talented, a lack of professionalism sometimes holds them back.

“I’d love to see more freelancers care deeply about the work — not just treat it like a gig. I also think more structure and accountability is needed. Missing deadlines, lack of follow-through — these things matter.”

She encourages freelancers to see their work as a business, not just a side hustle, and to show up with the same passion and commitment as full-time staff.

Final Thoughts: Freelancers, This Is Your Time

Peace’s experience reminds us that freelancing isn’t just a trend—it’s a foundational part of how modern businesses grow. However, professionalism, consistency, and care are what separate good freelancers from great ones.

“Freelancers who go the extra mile are the ones we call back again and again.”
